Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has said that this year’s Maritime Safety Week – which runs until the 9th July – is an opportunity for people to reflect on how to keep themselves safe when venturing on to the sea.
Mr Cameron said: “As a result of Covid, it is likely that more people than ever will wish to explore our spectacular coastline for recreational purposes, in addition to routine commercial activity which occurs in our marine areas every day."
“That’s why Maritime Safety Week, which encourages key organisations including HM Coastguard, charities and port authorities to share best safety practices and knowledge, is so important this year."
“However, just as important is that anyone planning to go to sea this summer takes responsibility for their own safety and prepares accordingly."
“As we know only too well, the sea can be an unforgiving environment and we really do want people to ensure they enjoy themselves safely and responsibly.”
