New data has revealed little improvement in the continued poor condition of primary and secondary schools in the Highlands.
The figures for 2022 show that 60 Primary schools in the Highlands are rated as being in a poor condition, which is a third of the total of all Primary school buildings in a poor condition across Scotland.
A total of 11 Highland Secondary Schools are also rated as being in a poor condition, making up a quarter of the national total in this category.
Edward Mountain MSP said:
“Whether it is overcrowding or poor conditions, the Highland school estate is in poor shape and in desperate need of modernisation.
“These new figures show little improvement from last year’s data which tells its own story.
“Progress in delivering renovations or new school campuses is happening at a snail’s pace. Pupils and teaching staff deserve better than this.
“Having visited many schools across our region I have been appalled at some of the poor conditions I have witnessed. It’s simply unacceptable for this to continue year after year.
“The Scottish Government and the Highland Council need to take urgent action so our children are given the opportunities for their future that they deserve.”
